Artificial Intelligence
Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, including Generative AI, bring about new challenges as well as opportunities related to online disinformation. The EDMO network together with its national and multinational Hubs is engaged in exploring the risks that artificial intelligence poses with respect to the impact and scope of online disinformation as well as the opportunities it opens for the development of new AI-powered technologies facilitating its detection and understanding.

Generative AI and Disinformation:
A Scientific Perspective
In February 2024, the EDMO Scientific Conference on Disinformation took place in Amsterdam, convening over 120 researchers from various fields of expertise to critically examine the evolving dynamics of disinformation. Among the myriad topics of the panels and discussions, the prominence of GenAI was undeniable, both in its role as an aggravator and as a potential mitigator of disinformation. As a follow-up the Conference , Claes de Vreese and Aqsa Farooq edited a special section of the International Journal of Communication. The open-access articles featured here aim to build on that momentum, offering empirically rich and theoretically grounded insights into AI’s role in the production, spread, and potential mitigation of disinformation.
EU funded projects on AI in dialogue with EDMO
The EDMO community and its Europe-wide network of hubs have started cooperation with six European Commission co-funded research projects, which include research on AI methods for countering online disinformation.
In more detail, the focus of ongoing research is on detection of AI-generated content and development of AI-powered tools and technologies that support verification professionals and citizens with content analysis and verification.
