For researchers, being able to access platform data is crucial for investigating some of the most pressing systemic risks facing individuals, social groups and society at large. However, platforms have raised concerns about the ethical and privacy implications of sharing platform data with researchers, leading to a significant reduction of data access for researchers in the last few years. To address these challenges and help platforms remain GDPR compliant while enabling researchers to access platform data, the European Digital Media Observatory’s (EDMO) cross-sector, multi-stakeholder Working Groups on Platform-to-Researcher Data Access, led by Dr Rebekah Tromble, were established. EDMO’s work has focused on devising a process, including the setting up of an independent vetting body, that can enable researchers to access platform data. This workshop aims to provide attendees with an up-to-date overview of the latest developments surrounding this process, particularly in the context of the Digital Services Act, including a focus on next steps for the research community. This workshop is organised by Aqsa Farooq and Claes de Vreese from the University of Amsterdam, coordinators of EDMO’s Research activities.
