The EDMO Training series on climate disinformation is part of EDMO’s thematic training series looking at specific disinformation topics.
The first training module in the series will explore the problem of climate disinformation, its history, the actors behind it and its narratives in different European countries.
How has digital media made it easier to use climate disinformation to reshape public perceptions- including yours? Climate Action Against Disinformation coalition communications co-chair Philip Newell will use the history of climate obstruction in Europe to explain how industries use public relations tricks to spread disinformation sabotaging public policy.
The training session will then present the work of two EDMO Hubs investigating climate disinformation in different countries across Europe. Evita Purina from Re:Baltica will present the fact-checking work on climate disinformation in different Baltic states by the Baltic Engagement Centre (BECID) and their recent report Pants on fire – how climate misinformation is spread in the Baltic states?
Ivan Ruta Cuker will showcase the work of the Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO) in tracking attitudes towards climate change and its media representation through an ongoing representative questionnaire survey. Presenting data primarily from the Czech Republic, Ivan will highlight the urgency of addressing information disorders related to climate change, as well as the widespread penetration of false narratives on this topic within the population.
The training module will conclude with an interview with Professor Jos Delbeke, EIB Chair on Climate Policy and International Carbon Markets, explaining the context and dispelling common disinformation narratives about EU climate policy.
