Few days before the election: Fake Múte B. Egede profile deceives users on social media

  • A profile pretending to be Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte B. Egede, is deceiving users on the social media platform X.
  • The fake profile recently shared a post in response to Donald Trump’s latest statement about Greenland.
  • The profile appears to be deceiving multiple users.

In January 2025, Naalakkersuisut, Greenland’s government, warned that a profile impersonating Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte B. Egede, had appeared on the social media platform X.

The fake profile commented on a post from Elon Musk:

“Keep your dirty hands off our country. Greenland is free and will remain free.”

Since then, the profile went silent.

Who is behind the fake profile—and whether it is one person or several—remains unknown.

But with only a few days until the Greenlandic election, the fake profile is now active again.

On Wednesday, the profile shared another post targeting the U.S. government following Donald Trump’s latest remarks about Greenland. In his statement, Trump reiterated his desire for control over Greenland, saying it would likely happen “one way or another.”

The response from the fake Múte B. Egede profile came swiftly:

“Greenland is part of Denmark. Those who want to take Greenland must declare war on Denmark before Greenland. Since Denmark is part of NATO and Europe, Trump can do nothing more than bark and threaten,” writes the fake X profile in English.

At the time of writing, the post has been viewed more than 35,000 times. Several users are also sharing the post, believing it actually comes from Múte B. Egede.

One of those who shared the post, thinking the profile was real, is Ole Wæver, a professor of International Politics at the Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen.

“It frustrates and surprises me. I usually double-check profiles and am very careful about what I share. It underscores the point that even if you try to be meticulous and aware of what you share, you can still fall for it,” says Ole Wæver.

Does not have an X profile

The clearest indication that the profile is fake can be found in its bio. It states that it is a “fan page” and has no connection to the Prime Minister.

However, this information is easy to overlook if you’re just scrolling past the post in your feed without clicking into the profile.

The profile also states that it has existed since March 2024, but there are no posts from before March 5, 2025. Therefore, it cannot be confirmed that it is the same profile that was active in January. However, both profiles share the exact same username.

It is also worth noting that the Greenlandic Prime Minister does not even have a profile on X.

According to Eva Mayerhöffer, an associate professor at the Department of Communication and Humanities at Roskilde University, the presence of a fake Múte B. Egede profile sharing posts so close to the Greenlandic election is a significant problem.

“If it’s unclear whether a politician’s profile on social media is real or fake, it’s a problem because people are increasingly forming their opinions based on social media. They use it to stay informed when deciding how to vote. Every day, a huge number of news items flood our social media feeds, so it’s not unlikely that a fake profile like this slips through and that some people take it as truth,” she says.

Eva Mayerhöffer also believes that this issue is not just a problem for Greenlanders who will soon be heading to the polls.

“Greenlanders may actually be in the best position to recognize that it’s a fake profile because they have a better sense of whether he would act that way. But it’s different for Danes and the rest of the world, who are also paying attention to the Greenlandic election right now. They are less equipped to spot the deception because they lack context.”
