Digital Media Literacy in EDMO: Special European Elections

This Special Edition of ‘Digital Media Literacy in EDMO’ concentrates on the European Parliament Elections and the media literacy initiatives undertaken by the EDMO Hubs related to this election.

#BeElectionSmart is an EU-wide EDMO campaign to support citizens in finding reliable election information and recognising false or manipulative content ahead of the 2024 European Parliament Elections. Each Monday from 29 April to 3 June 2024, a new message along with practical tips has been published on the websites and social media accounts of all 14 EDMO Hubs, covering all EU member states.

BELUX & the EDUbox trio prepares young people for European elections

As the June 2024 European elections draw near, the EDUmake project has unveiled the innovative EDUbox Politics series, designed to equip citizens, especially young voters aged 16-18, with essential knowledge and skills for democratic engagement.

This trio of resources on Politics, Persuasion, and Ideology guides learners through political decision-making, explores persuasion techniques, and encourages critical reflection on ideals and visions. These free teaching materials feature a user-friendly interface and high-quality content, currently available in English and Dutch (two versions, one tailored for the Belgian context and one for the Dutch context) and Croatian. EDUbox is suitable for both formal educational settings and informal learning environments.

Stay sharp during elections with BECID! How cognitive biases and media influence our decisions

In this public YouTube Live webinar organised by SALTO Participation & Information, BECID team members explored the vulnerabilities that lie in each and every one of us – our flawed perceptions of the world. Cognitive biases are used against us in information manipulation activities, such as propaganda and strategic disinformation.

(Mis)information during election times: how do you determine your vote? an Exhibition from BENEDMO

The European Parliament elections are set for June 6, 2023, amidst a climate of abundant (mis)information that can cloud voters’ judgment. Determining one’s vote becomes a challenge amidst political parties’ efforts to sway opinions through tactics like smear campaigns and emotional appeals. Additionally, there are organisations aiming to disrupt the electoral process or propagate conspiracy theories, further complicating decision-making.

Recognising this, Beeld & Geluid, in collaboration with BENEDMO, Pointer (KRO-NCRV), NPO Kennis, isdatechtzo.nl, and Netwerk Mediawijsheid, has developed a temporary exhibition called a “pod.” This installation sheds light on the impact of (mis)information during elections and its influence on voter choices. The exhibition runs until June 17, 2024, at Beeld & Geluid in Hilversum. Tickets for the museum can be purchased via the provided link.

Expert Insights: Podcast on Understanding Information and Disinformation in Election Campaigns

Mădălina Boțan, a researcher in the BROD project and a PhD lecturer at the National School of Political and Administrative Studies, Faculty of Communication, recently shared her expertise on information and disinformation during election campaigns. She was invited to the Media Literacy Lab podcast by the Center for Independent Journalism (CIJ) to discuss these important topics.

AFP – GADMO Partner with INholland for an Interactive Anti-Misinformation Exhibition Ahead of European Elections

In mid-May, INholland University launched “fabricated,” an educational initiative designed by its Sustainable Media Lab in collaboration with AFP. This travelling exhibition, debuting in The Hague shortly before the European elections, aims to enhance digital literacy through interactive games and experiments. It demonstrates the impact of AI, disinformation, and digital algorithms on public opinion and voting behavior. Available in Dutch, English, and German, “fabricated” will be displayed in The Hague, Brussels, Berlin, and Amsterdam until June 7, 2024.

AFP and BROD Launch Digital Courses to Combat Election Disinformation

AFP and BROD have launched two digital courses on tackling election disinformation. The first course covers tools to monitor campaigns and common disinformation types about candidates, parties, and the electoral system. The second course addresses harmful content on election day, including false voting requirements and fraud claims. Both courses provide practical examples and resources.

Learn to Spot Online Manipulation with IDMO & Google!

IDMO has partnered with Google on a prebunking initiative called ‘Learn to Spot Online Manipulation.’ This initiative features in-depth short videos that help people identify and stop the spread of misinformation online. The videos cover common manipulation tactics such as scapegoating, decontextualization, and discrediting.
