Ventotene, Italy

Social media have been held responsible for creating a climate of political distrust amplifying polarization, radical opinion and hate speech among its users and against political representatives. Especially the EU has become a frequent target of disinformation campaigns amplified through social media, for instance, during recent European elections. The social media communication challenge has been taken up by the European Commission with urgency proposing a new regulatory framework of social media platforms and online political campaigns. The question is to what extent the new EU regulatory action also empowers political parties, associations and citizens to engage in informed debate and critical exchanges about the prospects of EU democracy. This conference invites academics, journalists and relevant stakeholders to debate the risks and opportunities of the EU digital agenda.

Paula Gori, EDMO Secretary General will attend the event as a speaker on the panel “La comunicazione dell’Europa. Un progetto in transizione- Cattedra Jean Monnet COM.4.EU”
