EDMO announces initiatives on European elections and researcher access to platform data

The European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) will present a taskforce on the 2024 EU Parliament elections, as well as its work on research access to platform data, during its Annual Conference in Brussels on 25 May 2023. European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová will deliver a keynote speech at the conference.

With the European parliamentary elections taking place between 6-9 June 2024, online disinformation on EU policies and policymakers is likely to increase. The new EDMO task force will assess the risks ahead of the elections, monitor disinformation and foreign interference campaigns, and connect with other stakeholders working towards similar goals.  The members and objectives of the new task force will be presented at the EDMO Annual Conference.

In addition, EDMO will also provide details on its ground-breaking work on access to data of online platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and YouTube for research purposes and the creation of a new working group to facilitate these efforts.

During the conference, EDMO and its community of national hubs, policymakers, fact-checkers, journalists, and practitioners fighting disinformation will discuss current issues related to the fight against disinformation in Europe. After the addition of six new hubs in the past year, EDMO’s network of 14 hubs now covers the 27 EU member states and Norway.

Different panels will cover topics such as Artificial Intelligence, European regulations, Open Source Intelligence, among others.

The Annual Conference will conclude with a keynote speech by European Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová. Vice-President Jourová is responsible for upholding democracy, rule of law, media pluralism, and the fight against disinformation in the European Union.

Journalists are welcome to join the EDMO Annual Conference 2023.
