“Be Online Smart”: EU-wide EDMO campaign launches on 12 May

Together with its network of 14 national and regional hubs, the European Digital Media Observatory is going to launch a new media literacy campaign called “Be Online Smart” on 12 May to help citizens understand how algorithms shape what they see online.

From social media feeds to video recommendations, algorithms decide what content we see. These systems can help us find things we like – but they can also limit our view of the world, reinforce biases, and spread disinformation.

This campaign encourages people to learn more about how algorithms work, so they can make better choices, spot false information, and stay informed.

“Be Online Smart” is an offline campaign, with postcards, posters, and stickers distributed across the EU from 12 May until 30 May. These materials will raise awareness in schools, libraries, community centres and other public spaces.

The campaign follows the success of last year’s “Be Election Smart” initiative and supports EDMO’s broader goal of improving media literacy across Europe. It also builds on the recently published EDMO Guidelines for Effective Media Literacy Initiatives.

The multilingual materials will be available from 12 of May 2025.
