“Be Online Smart” Campaign Launches in Florence

The EDMO team based at the Florence School of Transnational Governance partnered with the Municipality of the city to spread the Be Online Smart Campaign locally. The following text is the translation of the press release published by the Municipality of Florence.

The European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), in collaboration with its 14 hubs operating in EU Member States and Norway, has launched the digital literacy campaign “Be Online Smart”.

Thanks to the collaboration between the European University Institute, which coordinates the EDMO project, and the Municipality of Florence, the initiative is now also reaching the Florence area. Informational materials – posters and postcards – will be available starting Tuesday, May 27 in various public spaces of the Municipality, such as neighborhood offices, registry offices, and other municipal buildings.

The aim of the campaign is to inform citizens and raise public awareness about how algorithms influence our online experience. Digital tools such as search engines, social networks, and streaming platforms use algorithms to select and organise the content we see. While these systems help us find content that matches our interests, they can also limit the variety of information, amplify disinformation, and reinforce existing biases. Understanding how these mechanisms work is essential to making more informed choices and developing a healthy sense of critical thinking.

The distributed materials include short explanatory texts

The content in Italian is available on the IDMO website, the observatory covering Itay, at this link: https://www.idmo.it/2025/05/08/be-online-smart-naviga-consapevolmente/
