Applications are now closed for the online training “OSINT Uncovered: Enhancing Investigations with the ObSINT Guidelines,” organised by EDMO and delivered by EU DisinfoLab. The training will offer an insightful presentation that delves into the world of open-source intelligence (OSINT) through the lens of the newly established “OSINT Guidelines.” Developed by a consortium of experts (EU DisinfoLab, The Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab), OSINT Curious, CheckFirst, Centre for Information Resilience, OpenFacto, and Logically), these guidelines offer a comprehensive framework to elevate the quality and effectiveness of public OSINT investigations. In response to the rapidly evolving OSINT landscape and the need for common standards, a group of OSINT specialists from diverse organisations united in 2022 in the framework of the EFCSN to form obsint.eu. They released the first draft of the Guidelines for Public Interest OSINT Investigations in April 2023, providing organisations with a robust set of good practices to enhance their methodologies, tools, skills, documentation, and work environments.
Our presenter has been integral to the project since its inception. By presenting real-life case studies, our aim is to showcase the value of the guidelines as a reliable framework for optimizing public OSINT investigations. The training aims to help identify best practices in OSINT work, at the organisational level, and on the need to implement ethical standards. While some OSINT techniques will be mentioned, the audience will not be trained on how to perform them.
Target Audience
The training is open to stakeholders working to tackle disinformation including journalists, fact-checkers, and researchers.
Meet your Trainers
Alexandre Alaphilippe is the Executive director and co-founder of the EU DisinfoLab. Since 2017, he has coordinated work on some of the organisation’s largest investigations into Information Operations linked to Russia, India and China. In 2022, he led the exposure of Doppelganger, which has been labeled as one of the largest information operation from Russia in the past years. He is a member of a number of working groups in Brussels and Washington DC linked to platform regulation, transatlantic relations, and hybrid threats. Alaphilippe is part of the Consortium Board of EDMO Belux.
Prof. Dr. Kalina Bontcheva is an EDMO Advisory Council member, researching AI methods for detection and analysis of online disinformation. She has leadership roles in the EC-funded vera.ai project, and the EDMO Ireland and BROD Hubs.
